The Distinguished Speaker Dr. Martin Hvidt is Professor at the Zayed University, and formerly an Associate Professor at the Centre for Contemporary Middle East Studies, University of Southern Denmark, Denmark. Educated as a geographer and economist he teaches courses in Political Economy and Development Economics related to the Middle East and the Gulf in particular. For the last decade his research has focused on the economic development of the Gulf countries and he is the author of a range of articles and book chapters on the Gulf. The Talk The presentation will discuss the so-called “The Dubai economic model.” It will trace the origins of the model and not least how it facilitated the economic boom during the decade of 1998-2008. Following that, the presentation will discuss the resilience of the model seen in the light of the financial crisis which commenced in 2008, and finally take a look at the sustainability of the model in light of the upcoming Expo 2020.
