Dr. Hosni Ghedira
Research Fellow (Non-Resident)
Dr. Hosni Ghedira is a distinguished Strategic Innovation Leader and R&D Executive with over 20 years of experience, he has driven high-impact innovation programs across energy transition, artificial intelligence, earth observation, space technologies, and climate resilience. He is a founding member of major scientific platforms and a member of the prestigious Mohammed bin Rashid Academy of Scientists.
Dr. Ghedira is presently a Professor of Environmental Science and Director of the Center for Geospatial Intelligence at the American University of Sharjah. He recently served as the Director of Research Engagement and Professor of Practice at the Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) in Abu Dhabi (2020–2025). Prior to his tenure at MBZUAI, Dr. Ghedira was the Founding Director of the Renewable Energy Mapping Center at the Masdar Institute (2010–2020), establishing it as the premier regional research hub for renewable energy assessment and earth observation in arid environments. He has also served as Assistant
Professor of Civil Engineering at the City College of New York (CUNY) and Research Associate Professor at the NOAA-Cooperative Remote Sensing Science and Technology Center (NOAA-CREST), where he directed the Environmental Remote Sensing Lab. During this period (2002–2008). Dr. Ghedira holds a Ph.D. in Water Sciences (Earth Observation and Water Resource Management) from INRS-Eau, University of Quebec, Canada (2001), an M.Sc. in Applied Sciences (Environmental Engineering) from the University of Sherbrooke, Canada, and a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering (Hydrology) from ESSTT, University of Tunis II, Tunisia. Throughout his career, he has supervised more than 25 Ph.D. and M.Sc. theses in the US and the UAE and has co-authored over 150 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings, reflecting his deep expertise in AI applications for sustainability, earth observation, renewable energy mapping, water security, and smart urban planning.
