Catalysing Culture and the Creative Economy Across Arab States - Pre-Conference Online Side Event to UNESCO MONDIACULT 2025

The Mohammed Bin Rashid School of Government (MBRSG) proposes an online pre-conference side event focusing on the pivotal role of the creative economy and cultural industries in accelerating economic diversification across the Arab region, and to discuss the state of measurement and data availability in the region, in relation to culture and creative industries.
As publisher of the Economic Diversification Index and the Arab Sustainable Development Goals Index, MBRSG brings domain-leading expertise to the pressing challenge of moving Arab economies beyond traditional sectors. This event will center around how measuring and developing in dimensions of creativity and culture can open new pathways for sustainable growth, job creation, and innovation for Arab cities. The creative economy—encompassing fields such as design, media, heritage, performing arts, and digital content—serves as both a driver for diversification and as a transmitter of social cohesion and identity. The event will involve expert led discussions on key themes including important themes and pillars related to Culture and Creative Industries (CCI) for the Arab world, data availability and challenges for CCI , and economic diversification through CCI.
Connection to Mondiacult UNESCO 2025
This side event is directly aligned with the agenda of Mondiacult UNESCO 2025, which emphasizes the transformative power of culture as an enabler for sustainable development and economic resilience. Our session will highlight how the Arab region’s cultural policy initiatives and creative industries can contribute to broader international conversations and commitments made at UNESCO’s forthcoming global cultural conference. The session will also showcase the findings of the Economic Diversification Index issued by the Mohammed Bin Rashid School of Government, with a particular focus on creative economy indicators, as a basis for discussion. The dialogue will be interactive, featuring inputs and perspectives from stakeholders and culminating in joint recommendations for the Mondiacult 2025 conference and beyond.
Outcomes
- The workshop will generate actionable insights for regional governments, on measurement, data gaps, and key pillars of the culture and creative industries, with a focus on cities of the Arab World.
- Enhanced visibility for the Arab creative economy on the global stage.
- Formal input into the Mondiacult 2025 conference process, establishing the event as a significant pre-conference contribution.
