Advancing Food Security in the UAE

Despite importing 80-90% of its food supplies, the UAE is considered food secure due to its capacity to purchase food on the international market even if at higher costs. However, food security remains a concern, particularly on a long-term basis, and the UAE has made substantial investments in this regard. The paper introduces the concept of food security as defined by the international community; examines the UAE’s food security strengths and challenges; outlines international best practice with regards to addressing food security, as well as success stories from countries with similar challenges; assesses the UAE’s current approaches to food security; and finally, suggest recommendations for improvement.
